After long days and restless nights, rest can feel like a rare gift. But at Montana Rescue Mission, we believe rest is something sacred — a reflection of God’s care for His people.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matt. 11:28
Rest is a gift from God, as well as a command. It was actually the first lesson God taught mankind in the Garden of Eden. He demonstrated this as He rested on the seventh day from the act of creation.
Rest is necessary for optimum physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Recognizing that true rest happens only when someone feels safe, clean, and cared for, Montana Rescue Mission recently made an investment to improve life at our shelter: new mattresses for our long-term program guests.
“Guests were really excited to get these mattresses. You can see the relief on their faces when they lie down,” one staff member shared. “It’s a small change, but it means a lot.”
The previous mattresses were purchased over ten years ago through a concentrated community fundraising effort. They have served the shelter guests well, but it was clear that they were past their season. In the interests of health, safety, and comfort, the Board of Directors approved the purchase of new mattresses that are antibacterial and bedbug proof. These mattresses, covered in hospital grade vinyl, are waterproof and able to be sprayed and sanitized. This will cut down on the stains, wear and tear, and will help prevent the spread of germs and pests.
Guests and staff began carrying out the old mattresses and bringing in the new on October 24. This small improvement is just one of the ways that we want to bring dignity to our guests, demonstrate care, and be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us by our generous donors. Our hope is to continue these improvements in the spring with new mats for guests in our Emergency Shelter as well. We are currently looking into funding opportunities for this next venture.
Every new mattress represents more than comfort — it’s a promise of renewal, a chance for weary hearts to rest and begin again. Thank you for helping us make that possible.
