Love That Shows Up in the Cold

JAMES 2:15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Winter has arrived. For all the beauty of snow-covered mountains and twinkling Christmas lights, there exists the harsh reality that too many people do not have a warm place to retreat.

At the Montana Rescue Mission, we continue to welcome our unhoused neighbors. We are blessed to be able to provide warm, comforting meals and respite from the harsh winter winds and temperatures. We have enhanced our Emergency Shelter with waterproof pillows and hospital blankets to give our guests a better night’s sleep.

And on those days that the temperature never gets above 20°, we will keep our Emergency Shelter open 24 hours a day to make sure our unhoused neighbors can remain safely indoors. Our Code Blue policies ensure no one has to endure dangerous environmental conditions.

Our prayer is that through these small acts of hospitality, we will begin a cascade of hope. As guests encounter compassionate staff and volunteers, we hope they experience the heart of Christ. As they experience His love, we hope they feel empowered to participate in our sobriety programming. As they participate in our programming, we hope they acquire the tools and resources they need to exit the shelter with housing and gainful employment.

And it all begins with open doors.

Thank you to the many friends and foundations whose contributions help us keep these doors open. Your faith has been accompanied by action, and lives will be changed because of you.

Montana Rescue Mission – HOPE LIVES HERE.
